By Vadym Lobariev, founder of MindHunt and Claude Certified Architect — recruiting engineers across Europe and Ukraine since 2011.
Quick answer
In the United States, an AI engineer earns roughly $145,000–$185,000 in base salary, with average total compensation around $211,000 and the top 10% above $300,000. In Western Europe the typical band is €70,000–€110,000; in Poland, €40,000–€60,000. In Ukraine, the surveyed median is $2,375 per month, and senior AI engineers working for Western companies start at about $5,500 per month (~$66,000 a year). Every published average hides a spread of 2x or more, because "AI engineer" is still three different jobs sharing one title.
Almost every salary page you will find for this role is written for the candidate: what should I ask for? This guide is written for the person on the other side of the table — the founder, CTO or hiring manager who has to decide what to budget, where to hire, and whether the number a candidate just named is reasonable.
I have used only figures I could trace to a named source and a date. Where good sources disagree — and for this role they disagree a lot — I show both numbers instead of picking the convenient one.
Why the Numbers Disagree So Much
Before any table: the title itself is unstable. "AI engineer" currently covers at least three jobs with different labour markets.
- AI / LLM engineer — builds product features on top of foundation models: retrieval (RAG), agents, tool use, evaluation, context engineering. Most product companies need this one.
- ML engineer — trains, fine-tunes and deploys models from data. A more established title with more consistent pay data.
- Research-leaning roles at frontier labs and Big Tech — a small, very highly paid group that drags averages upward on any site where they are over-represented.
If you have not yet decided which of these you are hiring, read AI Engineer vs. ML Engineer first — the salary question cannot be answered before that one.
The data reflects the confusion. For the narrower title "LLM engineer", ZipRecruiter reports a US average of $111,552 while Glassdoor reports $160,479 — same country, same year, more than 40% apart. Even the US government cannot settle it: the Bureau of Labor Statistics has no occupation code for AI or ML engineers at all. Any "BLS figure" you see quoted for this role is a proxy borrowed from computer and information research scientists (median $140,300, May 2025).
Method matters too. Glassdoor and Levels.fyi are self-reported by employees; Indeed derives its numbers from job postings; Levels.fyi skews toward large tech employers. None of them is wrong. They are measuring different populations.
AI Engineer Salary in the United States
| Source | What it measures | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Built In (2026) | Average base / average total compensation | $184,757 / $211,243 |
| Levels.fyi (Sept 2026) | Total compensation percentiles | 25th: $110,000 · median: $155,000 · 75th: $215,000 · 90th: $300,000 |
| Indeed (Sept 2026) | Average from 1,800 job postings | $153,024 (range $90,036–$260,078) |
| Glassdoor (2026) | Average self-reported base | $145,845 |
| Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025 | Median, AI/ML engineers | $189,500 |
By experience, Glassdoor data compiled by Coursera (updated May 2026) runs from about $103,000 with under a year of experience, to $138,000 at 4–6 years, to $186,000 at 15+ years. Built In puts entry level lower, at $80,000, and 7+ years at $194,413.
Location still matters inside the US: Indeed lists Seattle at $239,056 and San Francisco at $215,684, and Built In has San Francisco at $246,250.
The practical read for an employer: a competent mid-level AI engineer in the US costs $140,000–$180,000 in base. A senior engineer with real production LLM experience costs $180,000–$215,000 or more in total compensation — and if you are competing with well-funded AI companies for the same person, the 90th-percentile figure of $300,000 is the relevant one, not the average.
AI Engineer Salary in Europe
European data is thinner and the spread between countries is wider than most US hiring managers expect. The same role pays roughly three times more in Zurich than in Warsaw.
| Country | Typical band (total comp) | Top of market |
|---|---|---|
| Switzerland | €145,000+ | €200,000+ |
| United Kingdom | €85,000–€110,000 | €150,000–€250,000 |
| Netherlands | €85,000–€100,000 | €150,000–€250,000 |
| Germany | €70,000–€90,000 | €120,000–€160,000 |
| Poland / Czech Republic | €40,000–€60,000 | — |
Bands: Zen van Riel's European compilation (verified January 2026, drawing on Levels.fyi). Treat as ranges, not point estimates.
Two cross-checks. The Stack Overflow 2025 survey puts the UK median for AI/ML engineers at $149,756 — about $40,000 below the US median from the same survey, and noticeably above the band in the table, which tells you how much London finance and Big Tech offices pull the UK number up. And in Poland, the Just Join IT salary report (about 111,000 postings analysed) found B2B contract rates for AI/ML specialists rising 15% year on year — the fastest growth of any specialisation it tracks. Poland is no longer a "cheap" market for this skill; it is a mid-priced one getting more expensive.
AI Engineer Salary in Ukraine
Ukraine reports salaries differently, and reading the numbers wrong is the most common mistake I see foreign employers make. Figures are monthly, in US dollars, and net — typically the invoice amount of an engineer working as a private entrepreneur (FOP), who pays their own 5% single tax plus 1% military levy. The mechanics are explained in our Ukraine developer salary guide.
| Role (DOU.ua, Dec 2025, n=332) | Median, $/month | Note |
|---|---|---|
| AI Engineer | $2,375 | Middle 50% runs from $1,380 to $5,450 |
| ML / DL Engineer | $2,350 | |
| Data Scientist | $2,700 | |
| Data Engineer | $3,525 | Junior $1,000 · Middle $3,200 · Senior $5,000 |
Source: DOU.ua winter 2025/26 salary survey. The summer 2026 wave shows a similar AI engineer range of $1,400–$4,550 for the middle 50%.
That $2,375 median needs context. It blends juniors at local companies with seniors on Western contracts, and DOU itself notes that this category is the most volatile it tracks, with "a small group of very well-paid specialists" at the top. The number that matters to a foreign employer is what it takes to actually close a hire: on Djinni, the median salary of candidates who were actually hired into ML/AI roles is $4,250 per month, against a candidate-expectation range of $1,250–$4,000. In MindHunt's own placements, scarce senior profiles — ML/AI, DevOps, senior Go — start at about $5,500 per month.
Demand is moving fast: DOU counted 115% more open AI/ML roles in 2025 than the year before. The price advantage is real, but it is narrowing at the senior end.
What It Actually Costs the Employer
Salary is not cost. What you pay on top depends on the country and the contract, and this is where regional comparisons usually go wrong. The table below is my estimate for a senior AI engineer with production LLM experience, built from the figures above plus standard employer on-costs. It is an order-of-magnitude guide, not a quote.
| Where you hire | Senior compensation | Employer on-costs | Approx. annual cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States (employee) | $180,000–$215,000 | Payroll taxes, health insurance, benefits: typically 1.25–1.4× salary | $225,000–$300,000 |
| United Kingdom (employee) | £85,000–£125,000 | Employer National Insurance (15%) plus pension | £100,000–£150,000 |
| Germany (employee) | €90,000–€140,000 | Employer social contributions of roughly 20%, capped | €105,000–€165,000 |
| Poland (B2B contractor) | €55,000–€80,000 | None — you pay the invoice | €55,000–€80,000 |
| Ukraine (FOP contractor) | $5,500–$7,500 per month | None — you pay the invoice | $66,000–$90,000 |
Two caveats so the table is not misused. First, contractor arrangements carry no paid-leave or severance obligations by law, but good engineers negotiate paid time off into the contract anyway — budget for it. Second, a lower rate does not make a worse engineer acceptable. The cost of a wrong AI hire is not their salary; it is six months of a product roadmap built on a retrieval pipeline nobody evaluated.
The AI Premium Over Regular Engineers
How much more does an AI engineer cost than a comparable backend engineer? It depends entirely on how you measure:
- 10–25% in Europe, comparing like-for-like roles (Zen van Riel, January 2026).
- 62% on average for jobs requiring AI skills versus the same jobs without them, across more than a billion job ads in 27 countries — up from 56% a year earlier (PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer). PwC found the premium as high as 118% in consumer markets and as low as 16% in the public sector.
These are not contradictory. PwC measures the premium on AI skills across every kind of job; the European figure compares two engineering titles at the same level. For budgeting an engineering hire, 15–25% above your senior backend band is a realistic starting assumption — and it grows with seniority, because supply is thinnest where production experience is deepest.
The premium exists because demand outran supply. LinkedIn has ranked AI engineer the fastest-growing role in the US for two years running, and PwC's 2026 data shows hiring for AI-specialist roles up 68.9% year on year. The discipline as practised today is about three years old. There is no large pool of ten-year veterans to hire from, in any country.
What Moves an Offer Up or Down
Two AI engineers with the same title and years of experience can be 50% apart in market value. From the searches we run, these are the factors that move the number:
- Production scars. Someone who has run an LLM system for real users — and can tell you what broke, what it cost per query, and how they found out — is worth far more than someone with polished demos. This is the single largest differentiator, and the hardest to read from a CV.
- Evaluation skill. Anyone can wire up a model API. Engineers who build eval sets, regression-test prompt changes and can prove the system is working are rare, and they know it.
- Training versus application. Genuine model-training and fine-tuning experience commands a premium — but only pay it if your roadmap needs it. Most product companies do not.
- English and stakeholder communication. For remote hires in Europe and Ukraine, fluent English moves an offer more than any framework on the CV.
- Time-zone overlap. Willingness to cover three or four hours of a US working day narrows the candidate pool and raises the rate.
- Competing offers. Strong AI engineers do not stay on the market long. A slow interview loop costs you more than a higher offer would have.
How to test for the first two is covered in How to Hire an AI Engineer.
How to Budget the Role
- Define the job before the number. An LLM application engineer and an ML engineer who trains models are different budgets.
- Pick the percentile, not the average. If AI is your product, you are hiring from the 75th percentile and above. If AI is one feature inside a mature product, the median band is realistic.
- Decide the geography on total cost, not salary. Use the employer-cost table, not the headline figures.
- Keep 10–15% in reserve. In a market moving this fast, the candidate you want will usually have another offer, and the counter-offer conversation is cheaper than restarting the search.
- Refresh the numbers every six months. Figures in this guide were collected in September 2026; DOU publishes twice a year, and Levels.fyi and Indeed update continuously.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an AI engineer make in the US?
Between about $145,000 and $185,000 in average base salary depending on the source (Glassdoor $145,845; Indeed $153,024; Built In $184,757). Average total compensation is around $211,000, and the top 10% earn more than $300,000 according to Levels.fyi.
Do AI engineers earn more than software engineers?
Yes. Like-for-like comparisons in Europe show a 10–25% premium. PwC's 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, which measures AI skills across all job types, found an average wage premium of 62%. The gap widens with seniority.
What is the difference in pay between an AI engineer and an ML engineer?
In the US the two overlap heavily: ML engineer averages run from roughly $128,000 to $186,000 in base, and AI engineer figures sit in the same range. The label matters less than the work — training models, or building products on top of them — and how much production experience the person has.
How much does an AI engineer cost in Ukraine?
The surveyed median is $2,375 per month net (DOU.ua, December 2025), with the middle half of the market between $1,380 and $5,450. Senior AI engineers working for Western companies start at about $5,500 per month, or roughly $66,000 a year, paid as a contractor invoice with no employer taxes on top.
Why do AI engineer salary figures vary so much between websites?
Because the title is new and covers several different jobs, and because sites measure different things: self-reported pay, job-posting ranges, or large-tech-heavy samples. For "LLM engineer", two major sites differ by more than 40% for the same country and year. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics has no occupation code for the role at all.
Is it cheaper to hire an AI engineer in Poland or Ukraine?
Ukraine is generally less expensive at the same level, and both are far below Western Europe and the US. Poland's typical band is €40,000–€60,000 and rising about 15% a year on B2B contracts; senior engineers in Ukraine cost roughly $66,000–$90,000 a year. Poland offers EU jurisdiction and simpler travel; Ukraine offers a deeper senior pool at the price.
How much does a freelance AI engineer charge per hour?
Published ranges for US-market freelancers run from about $50 to $300 per hour, most commonly $100–$250, depending on specialisation and platform. For a scoped project this can be cheaper than a hire; for ongoing product work, a full-time engineer in Europe usually costs less within a few months.
What is the entry-level salary for an AI engineer?
In the US, roughly $80,000 to $103,000 depending on the source. In Ukraine, juniors in data and AI roles start at around $1,000 per month. True entry-level AI roles are scarce everywhere: most companies hire engineers who already have software experience and have moved into AI.
